WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT PERSONAL INJURY
IF YOU'RE INVOLVED IN A CAR ACCIDENT
Many people don't understand exactly what the term 'personal injury' means. We hope this brief overview will give you a better understanding of insurance terms, policy minimums, and, how to protect yourself in the event of a car accident.
Basically, personal injury is a term that defines injury to a person, his/her body, mind or emotions as opposed to an injury to property. The most common types of personal injury claims arise from traffic accidents, slip and fall accidents, workplace injuries, defective product accidents and medical malpractice accidents. In this article, we are strictly talking about personal injury as it relates to a motor vehicle accident:
- Liability
Connecticut law requires that all registered motor vehicles have liability insurance. Liability insurance covers property damages and bodily injuries to others for an accident where you are at fault.
- Uninsured/Underinsured
This covers bodily injury to you, relatives who live with you or your passengers if they are injured in an accident caused by: a driver with no insurance, a hit-and-run driver or a driver with insufficient liability insurance. The minimum amount required by law is $20,000 per person, and $40,000 per accident.
- Collision
This type of coverage will pay for damages to your car in the event of an accident (collision) with another vehicle or object when you are at fault. If you have no collision and you are at fault; the insurance company won't pay anything to repair your vehicle. There is almost always a deductible you must pay to repair or replace the car before the coverage starts to take effect.
- Comprehensive
This covers damage to your vehicle caused by anything other than an accident. Usually things like theft, vandalism, animal strike, explosion, flood, falling objects, windstorm, and glass breakage. There is usually a deductible.
- Medical Payments
This pays for the medical bills for you and anyone riding in your vehicle up to your coverage limit in case of an accident; regardless of who is at fault. But once your medical bills exceed your coverage limit; you then have to go through your primary health insurance. This is not mandatory, but it is recommended.
- Rental Reimbursement
This type of coverage will pay for a rental car if your car is damaged due to an accident. There is usually a maximum daily allowance.
We hope this brief overview makes it easier to understand your auto insurance coverage. In the event that you are involved in an automobile accident and have sustained injuries as a result of that accident, it is critical that claims are made in a timely manner. We are here to assist you with the necessary legal guidance and emotional support you may need, to ensure that you receive the support and coverage that is rightfully due to you.
